My Family
My Family
We're always ready with the quick quip, banter and teasing are the norm. Maybe it's our heritage, my dad's family are Welsh-Cherokee, mom's Irish-Cherokee, or our hillbilly culture...but we're a family of irreverant smart-asses. A typical example occurred last Saturday during our Thanksgiving dinner. We're all at the table, eating. My daughter innocently tries to ask me a question, "Mom, have you ever..." "No," I interrupt, "I never have." My sis joins in with "You should know your mother would never..." My mom, "And you shouldn't either." My husband, "I can't believe you'd even ask your mom that." Her boyfriend, "None of us has ever..." And so it goes back and forth. My daughter, giggling helplessly, appeals for help from my dad, "Poppy, are you going to let them pick on me like that?" My dad, who's been sitting there chuckling at us all, responds with "Hey, I ain't in on this." "See, Poppy doesn't even want to talk about it," my sis says, "He can't believe you even brought it up." It continues for several more minutes, with my daughter giving as good as she gets, until we're all laughing too hard to talk.
It's a cultural thing with us, one I had warned my husband about prior to his first visit with my family. If you get teased, it means we like you. If you take it well, and tease back, you're one of us.
Smart asses, the whole lot of us.
