Getting A Clue

Looks like France & Germany are getting a clue.

U.S. special envoy James A. Baker III won German and French agreement Tuesday to work for Iraqi debt relief, overcoming serious misgivings in Berlin about the U.S. exclusion of German firms from Iraqi reconstruction.

"Germany and the United States, like France, are ready not only for debt restructuring but also for substantial debt forgiveness toward Iraq," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's spokesman Bela Anda said in a statement.

Of course there's no telling what Baker promised in exchange. I trust him about as far as I could throw him.

Maybe France and Germany are simply trying to preempt the really bad news that will come out of Saddam's pending trial: all those French, German and Russian anti-tank rockets, missiles and materials for WMD programs weren't sold by rogue agents of the worldwide black market in military hardware, but actually came from official government agents. Sure would explain a lot that's happened in the past year or so, wouldn't it?
