Tough Old Boy
A local Harrison man is a pretty tough old boy.
While cutting brush, Mondy fell between the tractor and the blades, suddenly finding himself in a fight for his life.
His wife said he told her he grabbed a sway bar and wrapped a leg around another support. He struggled to reach up under the seat and pulled the tractor out of gear.
Dodging the spinning power-takeoff bar between the tractor and brush cutter, Mondy reached up and tried to disengage the brush cutter. But the blades caught him hard, taking off his right arm at the socket and slicing through part of his right buttock.
Mondy told his wife that the blades also cut off the back of his right boot and destroyed his belt buckle.
The tractor finally came to rest in a ditch, brush cutter blades still spinning.
Rather than wait for help, Mondy said, he disengaged the blades and recovered part of his arm. He placed the arm on the back of the tractor, put the tractor in gear and drove out of the field.
He had to pause at a gate to open it to get to a road, pulling through and then getting off again to close the gate.
Mondy first headed for home but turned around to go to a closer house when he began to feel lightheaded. On the way, a couple in a pickup truck stopped to help, getting him to a local hospital.
Day-mn.
Doctors weren't able to save his arm, but Mr. Mondy otherwise is expected to recover. And he's embarrassed at all the attention he's receiving.
"What was I supposed to do?" his wife said he asked. "Lie there and die?"
Pretty damn tough for a 56 yr. old.
Amazing.
