Pegging the Meter
Dean has rediscovered his religion.
The former Vermont governor - who does not attend church regularly, but prays daily - said he plans to include more references to Jesus and God in his speeches during campaign stops in the South.
Why is this news?
The shift is significant because Dean, who practices Congregationalism, has rarely talked about religion during the campaign - a topic that could play a huge role among Southern voters.
A recent ABC/Washington Post poll shows that 46 percent of Southerners said a president should use his religious beliefs to make policy decisions. Only 38 percent of Easterners agreed.
Why the sudden change from a man who left his former church over a disputed bike path?
Dean spokesman Jay Carson denied that the former Vermont governor was using religion to get more votes.
"He's never been the type of person or the type of candidate to make a decision based on the best political strategy," Carson told The Post yesterday.
You'll forgive my cynicism if I say that just about pegs my bullshit meter.
