What's In a Name?

Sometimes a lot. A whole lot.

(I had a really nice post planned for this, but by the time I got 'round to it I discovered Steve had already written it for me. Day late 'n a dollar short....the story of my life.)

In 2001 I taught math and sciences at a private (expensive), very liberal High School. I was older than most of the teachers, and the only one who had voted for Mr. Bush for President and most of our morning meetings were wasted on Democrat/Republican arguments. Anyway, on the surface, the premise of the school was to empower the young people in new and exciting ways, and since the parents of our students were so wealthy, not much was out of reach. If one or more became interested in Buddhism, a class was created, speakers were brought in, and most of the student body would be Buddhist for at least a few days. We had many of these things spring up (Learn to be a Shaman, Crystal healing, Establishing harmony with the pulses that the DNA of all living things emit, etc) and I soon noticed that although most of the students were at odds with most of the teachers, they still tried to copy them. For instance, most of the teachers were vegetarian, and so a lot of the students were also, and the school administrators made a big deal out of promoting that. One day I was going through the cafeteria line and noticed that the vegetarian plate looked unusual. I asked the cook what it was and she said "vegetarian plate". I then asked what specifically and she said "chicken bits". I was so shocked I said "chicken is a vegetable?" and she replied "they don't know the difference." She had (accidentally?) presented the core philosophy of the liberal school and its democrat promoters, and it seems to be in line with this issue.

Heh. "Chicken. The other white vegetable."
