The Hold Me Back Boys

Growing up where I did and having worked many hours in a liquor store, I've seen more than a few altercations....though surprisingly few actual knock-down-drag-out fist fights. More typically they were two grown men woofing at each other, neither of whom actually had the cajones to fight. Invariably the 'fight' would end when one or both would spout some variation of "If it weren't for these boys holding me back, I'd kick your ass."

I dubbed this type of participants the 'Hold Me Back Boys'. It always cracked me up to see how little actual force it took to hold those big he-men back. It usually looked a lot like this.

My favorite story, though, of one of these kinds of psuedo-fights involved two guys and their respective buddies that got into a little disagreement. The verbal assaults reached a crescendo, and one guy started threatening to kick the other's ass....who responded by inviting him to try. The guy paused for a moment, then looked around at his buddies and plaintively asked "Ain't one of you guys gonna hold me back?"

Heh.

For thousands of years the whole point of the posture has been to attract women (and I guess now it would also include trying to attract those flocks of metrosexuals yearning for a testosterone filled leader), without having to actually risk danger or be injured. All participants know this and if we change the rules now, it could lead to ... real fighting. If that happens, since it is difficult to feel attractive (or even function well) when you are broken and bleeding, the whole ritual will collapse and people will start going home alone.
