Local Interest

According to today's local paper, the Ozark Brew Pub will be re-opening under new management.

Common Grounds owners Julie Sill and Kari Larson have signed a lease to acquire the former Ozark Brewing Co. location on Fayetteville’s Dickson Street.

Hog Haus Brewing Co. is expected to open in October, said Greg Mack, a spokesman for Sill and Larson.

Former Brew Pub operator John Gilliam will stay on as brewmaster for the new restaurant, Mack said.

Good news, indeed. Julie & Kari are friends of ours, nice people and they run a great coffehouse there at the Common Grounds. We go there fairly often, and I smirk everytime I walk inside.

'Smirk' because the very first major case in which I worked involved the building in which the Common Grounds is located. I second-chaired the case for an attorney with whom I shared an office. We represented a tenant of the (now) former owner of the building....and together we kicked ass. I even got to write the brief that was eventually the basis for this published Arkansas Supreme Court opinion.

The trial was great fun, except for when the videotape mentioned in the opinion which I had cued up and ready to go before the trial started wouldn't work when we tried to play it to the jury. It worked just fine when I'd tried it that morning, but it eventually took me, the lead attorney and the bailiff to get the damn thing going at trial. That's when I learned the lesson that technology is great only when it works.

I learned another lesson during that trial too. Lawyers make crappy witnesses.....especially when they're rude, obnoxious and look like Jabba the Hut. (The owner of the building was an attorney) It got real interesting before that trial was over, let me tell you.

Heh.
