Stormy Weather

Everything's shaping up nicely for my daughter's Jamaican wedding a week from Friday....assuming there's anything left there after Ivan blows through this week. My son IM'd me last night from Okinawa, and seemed to think spending time together during a hurricane might be fun.

I think he's nuts. Of course, he just came through a direct hit from Typhoon Songda....which he said produced top winds of 160 mph there at the base.

Did I mention my son has ADHD....two of the primary characteristics of which are poor impulse control and a general lack of thinking things through before acting?

Here's what he did at the height of the typhoon. The winds are so strong that they are pushing rain in around his window....which is also pulsating from the strong gusts. My son, with a complete lack of forethought, decides to open the window to try to sweep some of the water out.

I only wish I were making this up.

He of course can't get the sliding window closed....duh....but finally put all his weight against it and pushed with all his strength and managed to get the window shut again without getting sucked through it.

And people wonder why my hair went prematurely grey.

Sounds like an old friend of mine from high school. After her dance practice, she got into her brother's car and turned it on (with his keys) to cool off while he was finishing up football practice. She then decided to catch a ride with a friend, but left the car running for him (Louisiana heat...) but she didn't want anyone to steal the car, so she locked the doors. With his keys still inside. While it was running. And they live 45 minutes out of town. Brilliant.

That's precisely the reason I always have a spare set of keys to my daughter's car. She's kinda goofy like that sometimes.

I once spent a fun couple of hours one morning unlocking her car with the spare key, deactivating the car alarm she'd set off trying to get in, and figuring out how to deactivate the anti-theft mechanism that she'd triggered so her car would start.

And her keys that she thought she'd locked in the car? No. They were outside her apartment in the trash that was waiting to be picked up that morning. She still swears her boyfriend at the time accidentally put them in there while bagging up the trash the night before.

Good grief -- I'm surprised you have ANY hair, let alone grey!

At least he didn't try to open the door against the wind this time. I call that an improvement.
