Old Is New Again

Something I read during my poly-sci undergrad years has stuck with me, mostly because at the time I thought it was eminently ridiculous. I was reading about Jefferson's election, and how 'old women wept and hid their Bibles under their beds'. Jefferson was a Deist (God as a clockmaker rather than the more traditional view of God as some omnipotent fairy godmother), and pre-election hyperbole had claimed that he would collect & burn all the Bibles. Silly, yes?

The Republican National Committee says it mailed fliers to voters in two states suggesting liberals want to ban the Bible, the New York Times reported.

The mailings include images of a Bible labeled "banned" and of a gay marriage proposal labeled "allowed." A mailing to Arkansas residents warns: "This will be Arkansas if you don't vote." A similar mailing was sent to West Virginians.

Dammit, I never get the good stuff.
