I think the whole question of Iraq is a massive red herring among voters. I don't think that what happens in Iraq really changes anyone's vote.

Iraq is useful for one thing: Democrats can say "look how bad Bush screwed up Iraq! Do you really want that screw-up for another four years?" And Republicans can say "the world's a dangerous place right now -- look at Iraq! We need a strong leader like Bush to handle the situation, not some Democrat wussie."

But ultimately I think everyone's vote is going to depend on whether they think Bush is better for them, here at home, than Kerry will be.

I think people just project their feelings about a particular canditate onto what's happening in Iraq. If you like Bush, then every time something bad happens in Iraq you say "thank God Bush is in control; it'd be so much worse otherwise." If you dislike Bush, then everytime something bad happens in Iraq you say "man, we gotta get rid of Bush, or things are just gonna get worse!"

Anyway, that's my observation, after watching pro and anti-Bush people discuss Iraq for the past couple years.
