Ultimate Juror Excuse

A potential juror out in beautiful downtown Jay, OK, had the perfect excuse for not showing up for jury duty. He dead. If that's not enough irony for you, just wait. There's more.

A Delaware County man who prosecutors say was killed by his father-in-law was called for jury duty in his alleged killer's murder trial.

That's right. The murder victim was called as a juror in his accused murderer's trial.

I know they have terrible problems getting enough jurors to show up, I've seen judges there send deputies out to pull in the first 12 people they saw on the streets. But this seems a little harsh.

Besides, you know no one would've picked him if he'd shown up.

The defense would likely choose him, because unless the guy is the ultimate masochist, there would be nothing less than a hung jury.

On a less flippant note, I recall that I continued jury duty summonses for my mother after her death. At first, I simply wrote on the response portion of the form that my mother had died, and I signed as the Administrator of her estate. After about the third Jury Duty Summons, I forwarded the return portion of the summons, and a copy of my mother's death certificate along with a letter to the Chief Judge explaining why my mother would not be reporting for jury duty.

That did it.

I can understand that, but Jay's a small town where everybody knows everybody. You'd think someone would've noticed the name before sending out the summons....especially since the guy was the alleged murder victim.

okay, that's a little too weird for me.

both the being dead part and the tie to the case.
