Schiavo Dead

In case you haven't heard, Terry Schiavo passed away this morning. May she now find the peace she was denied in life.

Our condolences to her family and loved ones.

Call me cold-hearted, but I only have condolences for her husband and their friends. Her family had no problem turning her life, her disability, and her death into a media circus swirling around them. If they had spent more time with/near their daughter and less time talking to lawyers, the press, etc., then perhaps my feelings would be different. As for Mrs. Schiavo herself, may she finally get the peaceful rest in death the was denied to her in life.

I use 'family' in the generic sense. I still have mixed feelings about the whole thing. One, I'm not convinced her husband was entirely truthful. Even if he was, I'm not comfortable unhooking someone who hasn't left a written advanced directive, especially if there's substantial disagreement over what they wanted. From a legal standpoint, that's just bad law asking to be abused by the unscrupulous.

OTOH, I'm also aware there's things you tell your husband that you don't tell your parents. And we will never know for sure whether she did or didn't.

Forget something. Even though I disagree with some of the things her parents did (Jesse Jackson), I can understand how you'd go into league with the devil if you thought it might save your child's life. And once they started down that road, it took on a life of its on and turned into a circus for every kook in the country.

I can't say I'd do differently if, God forbid, I were in their shoes.
