You Might Be an Arkansawyer If....

Every one of these is true for me, including #6. Of course it was their best 'Sunday-go-to-meeting' overalls, but overalls nonetheless.

At least it wasn't a tube top.

1. You can properly pronounce Ouachita.

2. You think people who complain about the heat in their
states are sissies.

3. A tornado warning siren is your signal to go out in the
yard and look for a funnel.

4. You know that the true value of a parking space is not
determined by the distance to the door, but by the
availability of shade.

5. Stores don't have bags, they have sacks.

6. You've seen people wear bib overalls at funerals.

7. You think everyone from a bigger city has an accent.

8. You measure distance in minutes.

9. You go to the lake because you think it is like going
to the ocean.

10. You listen to the weather forecast before picking out an
outfit.

11. You know cowpies are not made of beef.

12. Someone you know has used a football schedule plan their
wedding date.

13. You have known someone who has a belt buckle bigger than
your fist.

14. You aren't surprised to find movie rental, ammunition,
beer, and bait all in the same store.

15. A Mercedes Benz isn't a status symbol. A Chevy Silverado
Extended Bed Crew Cab is

16. You know everything goes better with 'Ranch'.

17. You learned how to shoot a gun before you learned how to
multiply.

18. You actually get these jokes and are "fixin' " to send
them to your friends.

Finally:

19. You are 100% Arkie if you have ever had this
conversation: "You wanna coke?" "Yeah." "What kind?" "Dr

With only a couple of changes, that could be a Montana list.

wah-CHEE-ta?

Nope. Close, but no cigar.

A better one might be a place Mike had trouble pronouncing correctly: Mt. Judea. Which everyone knows is pronounced 'Mount Judy'.

Heh.

Hmmmm....

WAH-chah-taw?

You're going to make me work at this, aren't you?

Posted by: Craig at October 21, 2005 07:19 AM

What fun would it be if I told you after the first guess?

hehe

Fine, it's pronounced

WA-sha-taw.

I don't live there anymore, but I grew up near Lake Ouachita. There's a town there named Washita. Yep. Pronounced the same way.

Well, there is no doubt. I am, most definitely, not from Arkansas. I can only relate to nos. 8 and 10.

Hey there Arkansawyer. So how'd you end up going from Garland County to PA? My husband says that parts of PA aren't much different from the Ozarks.

That's ok Jim. We like you anyway. But surely you knew #11 as well.

Actually, grew up in Montgomery County... next to Garland... Did the Air Force thing for a while... was ready to go home, but there on unemployment vs. a job where i was stationed... i stayed employed... and eventually work brought me to PA. I have lived in Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma... This part of PA is closest to home as any place I have ever lived.. Folks are friendly, lots of mountains and lakes and rivers.... just one big difference... taxes... and paychecks... both are much higher than back home. I am from the Ouachita Mtns, not the Ozarks! (at least, growing up, we were taught they were different, although from here, everyone sees the Ozarks only....)

Lakotah Souix: wahSHEtah at least that is what I was told in Colorado.
True story: my grandfather caused a row between my father, uncle and aunt because he came to grandmother's funeral service dressed in bib overalls, boots and covered in mud, (they were divorced). Seems my grandfather had been out with a pick and shovel digging her grave the previous five hours. Ask Mike, the old man's family is a real piece of work.

Yep, the Ouachitas are distinct from the Ozark plateau.

Pshaw that's nothing new to me, Bill. The biggest row of the many at my grandfather's funeral was over whether or not he'd be buried in overalls. One of my aunts and one uncle wanted to dress him in a suit. My mom, another aunt & uncle wanted him dressed in overalls, since that's all he'd ever worn. They didn't come to blows, but it was close. Some of them didn't speak to each other for years over it.
