Baby It's Cold Outside

We just barely missed the brunt of the ice storm, but a miss is as good as a mile. We've still got power, but it kept flickering off & on last night. Today the real problems start, temps are falling and the wind is picking up so the ice-covered trees will probably start breaking & falling this afternoon....and taking out power lines.

Right now it's about 19 degrees, with a 13 mph wind gusting to 20 mph. Which equals a wind chill of about 7 and too bloody cold to go outside if you don't have to. And it's only going to get worse later today.

Definitely a good day to stay home.

That storm just passed through here and was cold for sure. Everything was coated with ice until the clouds broke up this morning but I only lost a few branches in my yard. We weren't overcast long enough for the really big cold. I mainly coasted, burning wood and reading books, but did learn something useful for the next one. My dog is increasingly incapacitated by osteoarthritis and can barely walk so getting her across the ice to a spot where she prefers to use the bathroom was an issue. Since salt might not be good for her to walk on, (and is certainly not good for the lawn) I used dry sawdust that has been accumulating at the woodpile and made a path across the concrete and through the yard for her. It worked. Since it is so cold and the air is so wet the sawdust also froze fairly quickly but I had a large bag of it and just sprinkled a new path every time she wanted out.

Yeah, you don't want to use salt, but I bet the sawdust works as well or better.

Still ice on the trees here, but not too much on the roads, at least in our neighborhood which was as far as I went. Bridges and culverts are solid ice, but the rest of the streets are fairly clear. It's been snowing light but steadily most of the day. We haven't lost any branches but my catty-corner neighbor sure has. I think the worst is over, but I sure dread wearing my court clothes tomorrow. Someone should invent Thinsulate dress slacks.
