Reckon They're Kin?

Seeing stories like this always make me think of my paternal great-grandfather. Irate because one of his sons wanted to marry a cousin, Grandpa boomed "Y'uns'll have 6-toed babies!" [/hillbilly accent]

He passed away when I was pretty young, so I don't have many memories of him. Just the stories my dad tells, like how Grandpa was so strong when he was young that he could carry a railroad tie on each shoulder without even straining. And how he could make any sound of any animal, a rustic Dr. Doolittle of sorts. One of my favorite stories is how he raised a pair of screech owls that would fly up to his opened window in late evening after they were grown, seemingly to converse with him before heading out to their night's hunting. Grandpa hated being indoors, and much preferred to be out roaming the woods....which he did as long as he was able.

My only clear memory of him is being at his house when I was a little girl, Grandma & Great-Grandma chattering like magpies as they prepared lunch. And Grandpa's tall, lanky form sitting quietly rocking in his chair....not saying much unless he had something to say.

Reckon I might take after him a little.
